Abertay University Library welcomes visitors and offers external Library membership to a range of groups.
External membership provides access to eligible items from the Library's printed collections. You can use LibrarySearch to check what we hold before you visit.
External members do not have access to Abertay's licensed electronic resources, including databases, e-journals and e-books.
Membership and access arrangements depend on which group you belong to. Select the relevant section below.
Current S5 and S6 pupils at secondary schools in Tayside can apply for free external Library membership.
Approved membership is required before a school pupil can use the Library independently, including for reference or study. The general public access arrangements described below do not apply to school pupils. Please ensure you have received a letter of approval from your teacher or school librarian before you visit us.

Once your membership has been issued, please bring your Library card whenever you visit as this is a requirement of using the building for independent study.
Membership is intended to support individual study and use of the Library's printed collections. External member borrowing of print items is restricted to items not in use on reading lists.
All pupils must follow the Bernard King Library Building Code of Conduct. Membership or access may be withdrawn if someone's behaviour disrupts other Library users or the Library's facilities are misused.
Pupils below S5 cannot use the Library independently but may attend as part of an arranged and supervised school visit.
Staff of secondary schools in Tayside may also join the Library free of charge. Please bring your school staff ID or other evidence of employment.
We also welcome class and group visits to the Library during April to June and December.
Visits usually last around 1 to 1.5 hours and can include hands-on guidance from Library staff to support a class assignment or provide an introduction to good information practice, such as searching for information, evaluating information sources and identifying different types of information source.

Abertay University participates in the SCONUL Access scheme, which allows eligible students and staff from participating universities to use other university libraries.
Your access and borrowing rights depend on your SCONUL Access category. Some members can borrow from our eligible printed collections, while others have reference access only.
Apply through the SCONUL Access website before visiting. Your home institution will confirm your eligibility.
Once your application has been approved, bring your SCONUL Access approval email and your current university staff or student ID to the Support Enquiry Zone on Level One of the Library.
Wi-Fi access is available through eduroam.

NHS Tayside staff can join the Library free of charge.

Retired Abertay staff can join the Library free of charge using a National Entitlement Card.
Please bring your National Entitlement Card to the Support Enquiry Zone on Level One of the Library.
Retired staff can borrow up to six books from the Library's eligible four-week-loan collection.
Members of the public may use the Library on weekdays between 8am and 5pm for reference and study without charge or membership.
These general public access arrangements do not apply to school pupils. School pupils must follow the eligibility and membership requirements described above.
If you would like to borrow items or use the building during evenings and weekends, you must become an external Library member.
External members may borrow eligible items from the printed collection. Reading list items, one-week-loan items and reference-only items cannot be borrowed by external members.
You can become an external Library member and borrow eligible items free of charge.
