Newspapers can help you explore current events, public debate and reporting at the time an event took place. Depending on your task, you might use an article for information or analyse how a newspaper presents an issue.
Find newspaper articles
For UK newspaper articles, start with Lexis+ UK. It provides searchable article text from a range of national and regional newspapers.
Search using topic words or details from a known article. Use the newspaper and date options to focus your results, and check the available dates for the title you need.
LibrarySearch does not search the newspaper collection in Lexis+ UK. Search Lexis+ UK directly for that content.
LibrarySearch includes newspaper articles and newswires from other sources. Search using keywords or phrases, then use the resource-type filters to narrow your results to newspaper articles or newswires.
When you need the original newspaper page
Database article text may omit photographs, adverts, page layout or other parts of the original newspaper.
If these matter to your task, look for an original issue or a page image in a publisher archive or newspaper collection.
Publisher websites
Publisher websites can provide current reporting and archive material. Some content requires registration or a paid subscription. Access through a publisher’s website is not automatically included in Abertay access.
Newspaper collections and archives
For historical newspapers or original issues, try:
- Dundee Central Library’s Local History Centre, which holds local newspapers and back issues.
- The National Library of Scotland’s newspaper guide, which explains routes to its newspaper collections and databases.
Check the available titles, dates, formats and access arrangements before planning a visit.
