Library Services can work with you to help students find, evaluate, manage and use information effectively and ethically. We offer teaching within programmes and modules, online guidance through the Skills Hub and Library website, and one-to-one support for students.
Support is usually most useful when it is connected to what students are being asked to do and provided at an appropriate point in their programme or module. We will work with you to tailor support to the subject, level of study and assessment.
Teaching within programmes and modules
Library staff can contribute to induction and embed teaching within a module or programme. We will agree the intended learning outcomes, content and timing with the module or programme team. Different topics can be combined to meet a particular need.
Sessions can cover:
- getting started with the Library, LibrarySearch, reading lists and subject resources
- planning a search and developing effective search strategies
- finding appropriate academic and subject-specific sources
- evaluating sources and AI-generated information critically
- managing references with RefWorks and referencing sources accurately
- using information ethically, including citation and copyright
- advanced literature searching for dissertations, projects and literature reviews
Embedded support can be particularly useful when students are starting a programme or new level of study, preparing for an assessment that requires independent research, or beginning a dissertation or major project.
Where students need connected support with information skills and broader academic or study skills, we can work with the Learner Development Service to plan an appropriate response.
Use Skills Hub guidance in your module
The Skills Hub brings together guidance from across Learning Services. It includes support with finding and evaluating information, search strategies, source types, referencing and using AI in your studies.
You can link directly to relevant Skills Hub pages from MyLearningSpace. Linking to the page rather than copying its content means students reach the current guidance.
If existing guidance does not meet your students’ needs, email Library Services to discuss a new or revised guide. We will involve the appropriate Learning Services team where a request crosses service areas.
One-to-one support for students
Students can also book a one-to-one appointment for help with finding, evaluating and using information. You can direct them to the Skills Hub to choose the right support.

Email library@abertay.ac.uk as early as possible to discuss an embedded session or online guide. Please include:
- the programme or module
- the level of study and approximate number of students
- the relevant assessment or research task, where applicable
- the skills you want students to develop
- your preferred timing
We will discuss the most appropriate content and form of support. Requests are subject to staff availability.
