Reporting verbs are verbs such as argues, suggests, reports, finds and concludes. You can use them to introduce and discuss information from sources.

The verb you choose shows what a source is doing and can influence how the reader understands your stance towards it. Choose a verb that represents the source accurately, rather than selecting one simply because it sounds academic.

A reporting verb can help you integrate information into your own writing, but it does not replace a citation. For the wider writing process, see Integrating information from sources. For the principles of acknowledging sources, see Citing.
