On Saturday 12th May the second phase of the Library refurbishment begins seeing Levels 3 and 4 transformed. The Library building will remain open but both Levels 3 and 4 will be closed for the summer. This means that we are moving the majority of our book stock into a remote storage location. Levels 1 and 2 will remain open for most of the summer and we will have a smaller lending collection available in the Creative Design Suite on Level 2.
There will inevitably be some disruption to Library services and resources whilst the final phase of the refurbishment is carried out but we will ensure that it is kept to a minimum. Please see below for full details of any alternative arrangements we’ve put in place this summer to provide you with continued access to resources.
Will there be Library staff in the building during the summer?
No. As the Library team are based on Level 4 we will be moving to G21 in the Graham building for the duration of the summer. We will still be available to provide help and support with all Library and IT queries though.
How can I contact the Library?
You can email us on library@abertay.ac.uk or contact your Academic Librarian directly with any subject-specific queries or to arrange a meeting. You can also go to SEZ and they will refer your query on to us via phone/Skype.
We will also be running weekly Library and IT drop-in sessions during the summer so you can still get specialist one-to-one help from an Academic Librarian or the Digital Skills Officer.
Library and IT drop-ins will run every Wednesday from 16th May until 29th August in the Social Learning Space, Level 1 of the Library, 12-1pm.
Pop along to a drop-in session for help and advice on the following: Referencing and RefWorks, search strategies and finding information, LibrarySearch and Library eResources (journals, eBooks, databases), managing long documents (formatting, page numbers, tables etc.), managing data in Excel, poster presentations using PowerPoint, Reading Lists, and much more.
Can I still borrow books over the summer?
Yes, of course! We have identified a small collection of high-demand print books, consisting of essential and/or recommended titles on Term 2 and Term 3 reading lists (for students undertaking resits or accelerated degrees). These will be located in the Creative Design Suite on Level 2, which will be directly accessible throughout the works, except for the majority of July, when Level 2 will be closed for three weeks (exact dates TBC). During this period, you will still be able to borrow as we will provide a book retrieval service on request. Just check the details of any title(s) you wish to borrow on LibrarySearch and either email it to library@abertay.ac.uk or go to SEZ.
Remember: from the right-hand menu on LibrarySearch you can refine your results by ‘Available in the Library’ so that only physical items appear in your results.
All items in the summer collection are either 1-week or 4-week loans. Unless requested by another user, 1-week and 4-week loan items will automatically be renewed twice for the same period. This would mean that if no request is placed, you can keep a 1-week loan for three weeks and a 4-week loan for twelve weeks. We will alert you by email of the amended due date(s). After this, we ask that you return your items. You can keep track of your loans and due dates via your Library Account.
Please note: all of our physical book stock will still be searchable on LibrarySearch. The items that are available in the Creative Design Suite will display as available but all items that are in remote storage will show as ‘Currently Unavailable for Lending’. As we will not be able to access any of the stock that is in remote storage during the summer, we will purchase an additional copy of any required titles where available. Additional copies may be purchased as an eBook or print copy via rush delivery depending on availability (eBook copies will be available sooner) All purchase requests for an additional copy of an item that is in remote storage will be handled individually; although we will endeavour to provide access to an additional copy, it may not always be possible. Please email any requests to library@abertay.ac.uk or go to SEZ and they will pass them on to us.
What other resources are available during the summer?
All of our Library eResources are available 24/7 and from anywhere. We always recommend accessing our eResources via the Library intranet pages as using our authenticated links means that when you’re off-campus, you don’t have to hunt for the correct login option and will ensure seamless access to our subscribed content.
LibrarySearch – our Academic search tool searches across most of our online journal and eBook collections, databases and OA repositories from one simple search box.
A-Z Online Resources – a list of authenticated links to our subscription collections and databases. Use this page if you want to go direct to a resource and start searching.
BrowZine - BrowZine is a browsable newsstand of the library’s top journals. Easily discover, read, and monitor the key journals in your field from anywhere and on any device. Available via LibrarySearch or as a FREE app.
Can I still use the Library for studying?
Yes. Although Levels 3 and 4 will be closed for the summer, study spaces and PCs are available on Levels 1 and 2 for use.
Where can I get more information?
Further updates will be shared regularly via email, MyAbertay and social media and check out the Library News tile from the Library homepage for all service updates and resource advice. If you have any questions about the refurbishment or access to resources during the summer please email library@abertay.ac.uk and we’ll be happy to help.
We're super excited to see how Levels 3 and 4 will look once this final phase of the project is completed. And not forgetting our new office!
