Name: Claire Morton
Title: Marketing & Recruitment Assistant
Length of service: 25 years
What has been your career path while at Abertay?
I started in January 1994 as a Clerical Assistant for the postgraduate Business degrees, based at Dudhope Castle, with Graeme Martin as the Head of School at that time. And my first colleague was Janice Grant, who I work with now!
I was then relocated to the school office at the Business School based in Bell Street in various locations throughout the University – I have worked on every floor apart from 4! I was there for a number of years and took on roles as Supervised Work Experience Co-ordinator for the Business Studies degree and then divisional support for the Law Division amongst other things.
I worked under a number of different Heads of School whilst in DBS. After DBS I joined SHS as PA to the then Head of School, Steve Olivier.
I have also worked in the Partnerships Office with June Leishman and assisted Alastair Robertson when he started his job here in TLE. I have also helped out in a number of other areas, when asked to (or told to), over the years.
What made you want to work here?
I was on an YTS with Dundee City Council and was coming to the end of a temporary contract which would have seen me going from a normal wage back down to a YTS wage. I really didn’t want that to happen so the job came up at the perfect time for me.
How has the University changed over the years?
There have been a lot of changes and we have definitely moved with the times, I would say that we have also gone full circle with some things, reintroducing them in a slightly different format – we now have Bell Street Ventures and used to have Embreonix, which was a similar thing.
What are your memories of the campaign and, eventually, confirmation of University status in 1994?
I am afraid to say that I don’t remember all that much about it to be honest. Being based up at the Castle we weren’t really involved in too much of the stuff that was happening but I can remember being asked what I thought the name should be.
Who has been your favourite or most memorable colleague?
I have met some amazing people during my time here at Abertay and we have had many laughs and tears along the way. I couldn’t single any one person out. They all know who they are! Some of them are still working here.
What is it about Abertay that has made you want to stay all these years?
I have had so many opportunities to work in various departments and have gained so much experience and the people are genuinely fab.
