Understanding AI risks isn’t about avoiding these tools — it’s about using them with confidence and responsibility when they are permitted. By knowing the limitations, you can decide when AI is useful and when your own critical thinking and academic sources must take priority.

Generative AI tools can be powerful study aids, but they also come with important risks. This page highlights the main dangers of over-reliance on AI and explains why you must always combine AI use with your own judgment and proper academic sources. Mastering these risks will help you make the most of our other guidance on using AI effectively.

Important note:

Always follow your assessment brief. It will specify whether you can use Generative AI (GenAI) in your work, and whether this must be acknowledged. Requirements may vary by module or programme. If there is any conflict between this guidance and your assessment brief, the brief takes priority. For details of the University’s official position, see Using AI: Rules and Responsibilities.
