Recording a Narrated PowerPoint Presentation

Check:

• what file type you must submit, such as PowerPoint, PDF or MP4 video
• the time limit
• whether you need audio only or both audio and camera
• whether captions, transcripts or speaker notes are required
• where and how the file should be submitted
• whether there are any file size limits

Narration recording is a feature of the desktop PowerPoint app. PowerPoint for the web has more limited recording options.

Check that:

• the recording starts on slide 1 and plays through without gaps
• your voice is clear and easy to hear
• slide timings work properly
• important charts, images and diagrams are explained clearly in your narration
• the exported file opens correctly on another device if possible
• you have left enough time for upload, as narrated presentations and video files can be large

These are some of the most common problems students run into when recording and submitting narrated presentations.

• Submitting the wrong file type. Check whether your assessment requires a PowerPoint file or a video file before you submit.
• Exporting a video without narration. Always play the exported video back to confirm that narration and slide timings have been included.
• Reading directly from crowded slides. Slides should support your presentation, not act as a script. Use speaker notes for what you want to say.
• Not explaining important visuals. Charts, diagrams and images should be explained clearly in the narration, especially where important information may not be obvious from the slide alone.
• Leaving recording until the deadline. Narrated presentations and video files can take time to record, export and upload.
