At Abertay, we are using Turnitin’s AI Writing Indicator. This tool is separate from the Turnitin Similarity tool which you can read about in the Turnitin guide.

Similarity scores and AI Writing Indicator scores measure different things. A similarity score identifies matching text found in Turnitin's databases. The AI Writing Indicator is a prediction about whether qualifying prose may have been generated or modified using AI. Neither score, on its own, establishes academic misconduct.

Staff may consult the AI Writing Indicator  but are not required to review it routinely. Its results may prompt further review; they do not prove that AI was used or that academic misconduct occurred and must not be used as the sole evidential basis for a misconduct decision.

If staff have concerns, they must consider your work, the assessment brief and other relevant evidence. The indicator cannot determine whether AI use was permitted, appropriately acknowledged, or involved approved assistive technology or a reasonable adjustment.

Suspected academic misconduct is referred to an Academic Disciplinary Officer (ADO), who is responsible for the preliminary investigation.

Student Access to the AI Indicator

At present, you cannot view the AI Writing Indicator or report directly in Turnitin, including after submission. This is determined by Turnitin’s product configuration and is not something Abertay can change locally.

However, it's possible that the AI Writing Indicator results could be shared with you if:

  1. an Academic Disciplinary Officer (ADO) needs to discuss concerns about potential academic misconduct with you (they may share your score and other information either orally or by screen sharing).
  2. your case is escalated to a Student Academic Disciplinary Panel (you will receive a screenshot of the relevant AI score and report as part of the evidence).

If you are unsure whether you can use AI in an assessment, check the assessment brief first. It should explain whether AI use is permitted, restricted or prohibited and how any permitted use must be acknowledged. If anything is unclear, ask your module tutor before you submit your work.

If you have been contacted about a possible academic misconduct concern, follow the instructions in the message you received. The Academic Disciplinary Officer dealing with the case can explain the concern and the next steps. You can also seek advice and support from Abertay Students’ Association.

If you have a technical problem submitting work through MyLearningSpace or Turnitin, use the University’s student IT support route and tell your module tutor as soon as possible.
