The CLA Higher Education (HE) Licence covers most printed books, journals and magazines published in the UK, plus many published overseas and a large number of digital publications. There are, however, limits on how much can be copied dependant and these are summarised below. Further information is available in the Licence document .
The CLA HE Licence allows Licensed Copies to be made available to students where the copying does not for any single occasion or purpose or, in the case of Course Collections, during any one Course of Study, exceed either singly or in aggregate the greater of ten (10) per cent of any published edition,
OR
- in the case of a book, one complete chapter;
- in the case of an article in an issue of a serial publication or in a set of conference proceedings, two whole articles in any single
issue or (except for any CCC Electronic-Rights Works), where the issue, or a substantial part of it, is dedicated to a particular theme, any number of articles dealing with that particular theme;
- in the case of an anthology of short stories or poems, one short story or poem not exceeding ten pages in length; and
- in the case of a published report of judicial proceedings, the entire report of a single case.
The licence does not cover printed music, maps and charts, newspapers, and unpublished materials. Some publishers, works and countries may not be covered by the licence but library staff will carry out the necessary checks on your behalf.
If the library owns an ebook or ejournal then a scan will not be made. Instead, library staff will add a link to the electronic resource in the reading list. When there is an ebook available for purchase then the Library will consider purchasing the book instead of scanning the chapter.
