Before submitting coursework, you should carefully proofread your work. Make sure you leave enough time to do this. If work is submitted without proofreading, marks can be lost. The Learner Development Team do NOT proofread work but can support you to build your skills.
If you have a Specific Learning Difficulty, you may be entitled to receive proofreading support. Please contact Advisory for further information.
Proofreading is checking the final draft for errors in formatting, spelling, grammar, punctuation, word use, and referencing. Some marking criteria will assess one or more of these areas so proofreading can help improve your grades.
Re-read your assignment brief and identify any formatting instructions (e.g., information on font size, line spacing).
Follow the instructions!
Make use of spellchecking tools (unless stated as prohibited in your assignment brief).
In Microsoft Word use Editor: F7
Now read your work aloud OR use assistive technology.
There is a Read Aloud function in Microsoft Word: Alt+ctrl+Space.
Read and Write Gold software is available on all library computers.
Why bother? Sentences that have become too long are easier to identify when read aloud. You may also be able to hear grammatical errors made or identify punctuation issues.
Check your word use.
In Microsoft Word use Editor: F7. Check your formality score.
Re-read your assignment brief and identify which referencing system you should be using.
