What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is an online reference management tool that allows you to:

  • create, organise and share an online database of references, and
  • format reference lists to the referencing style of your choice quickly and easily.

There are lots of referencing tools available to use, some of which are freely available. Abertay subscribes to RefWorks, and as such, we can support you with it whilst you use it.

Any new tool can take a bit of time to understand, but the benefits of RefWorks include:

  • it saves you time! Reference lists are created in seconds, saving you hours of typing time formatting your references manually
  • it's web-based, so you can use it anywhere
  • it's easy to build content in RefWorks, exporting references from LibrarySearch, Google Scholar, databases, and the web

It's tempting to leave RefWorks until the last minute or when you have larger pieces of work, but the earlier you use it, the greater the benefits.

Exporting references

You can populate your RefWorks database quickly and easily by exporting content from eg LibrarySearch. You can also export from individual databases, Google Scholar, and the Internet. This short video will explain how to do this.

Editing references

Your references might not always import correctly, there might be missing information, or the metadata might be incorrect; this can be corrected in RefWorks. This short video will explain how to do this.
