RefWorks

Remember, regardless of which referencing tool you use, you still need to check your referencing before submitting your work. RefWorks is there to help with your referencing, but the final submission is your work. It can be useful to have referencing guides to hand whilst checking your references are correct.

• OSCOLA: it is advised not to use RefWorks for OSCOLA referencing. 

Watch the video in the section above on Editing References. Remember to make any corrections to your references in RefWorks. If you make your corrections in Word, the next time you add/delete a citation, the document will refresh and sync with the information in RefWorks, so losing any corrections made in Word.

For APA 7th ed. in RefWorks, you'll notice there are a number of options to choose from.  Choose the option:

This version has been confirmed for use by the Psychology Division. Students are asked to put a footnote at the end of the Reference List to say they were generated in RefWorks.

If you're working with numerous references, say for a literature review, if might be easier or beneficial to screen or filter results in an Excel spreadsheet.  To do this:

In RefWorks:

• Go to the folder you'd like to export
• From the Share icon menu, choose Export References
• Choose Tab Delimited (.tsv)
• Export

This will create a file in your downloads folder.

In Excel:

• Go to Data / Get Data dropdown
• Choose From File / From Text/CSV
• Select your recently downloaded file from My downloads eg export.tsv
• Import
• Load

You'll now see all the metadata attached to your records displayed in Excel, including the abstract, if available. Format and filter as required

In RefWorks, you can view your content in different ways. Use 'Display Options' to choose how many references to display per page, or to display in different ways, eg Citation View. This is a useful way of seeing how your references will be formatted, and any possible missing information.

• use the cog wheel icon icon to change style if necessary

New users to RefWorks will see a predefined list of referencing styles, whilst existing users will see styles they've recently used. If the style you need is not there, use the Search function to find the style you need. Citation View will now display your content in the style of your choice.

Styles can also be updated from within RefWorks Citation Manager (RCM). With RCM open: go to the hamburger menu; choose Citation Style; and select or search for the style required.
