Grammarly Free and Pro include (Gen)AI capabilities, some of which do not align with University frameworks and policies.*

Therefore, if you are considering using Grammarly, we encourage you to think critically about the ethics and consequences of using such a tool.

*For those of you with a Support and Development Plan, please seek advice from Advisory.

Important note:

Always follow your assessment brief. It will specify whether you can use Generative AI (GenAI) in your work, and whether this must be acknowledged. Requirements may vary by module or programme. If there is any conflict between this guidance and your assessment brief, the brief takes priority. For details of the University’s official position, see Using AI: Rules and Responsibilities.

Best practice when using Grammarly

If you still want to use Grammarly for proofreading, we advise you to turn off the GenAI capability or explore alternative tools, such as the Editor function in Word.
