Copilot Chat is Abertay’s supported AI assistant — the University’s secure alternative to public chatbots like ChatGPT. It is licensed for all students and staff. The University is currently licensed only for Copilot Chat, not for the Copilot features integrated into Microsoft apps.

Unlike public AI platforms, Copilot Chat runs with extra security through the University’s licence — meaning your data and assignments are not shared for training or storage.

Copilot could potentially help you explore topics, summarise information, generate ideas, and practise effective prompting — but it must always be used responsibly.

This page explains how Copilot could support your studies and how to use it effectively.

Important note:

Always follow your assessment brief. It will specify whether you can use Generative AI (GenAI) in your work, and whether this must be acknowledged. Requirements may vary by module or programme. If there is any conflict between this guidance and your assessment brief, the brief takes priority. For details of the University’s official position, see Using AI: Rules and Responsibilities.
