T&Cs means “terms and conditions” — the rules set by a company about how you can use their tool and how your data will be handled.

AI tools vary in how safe they are for university work. Some carry risks in their terms and conditions — like hidden costs, unclear data ownership, or unfair use of your input. But even when using a safer, Abertay-supported tool such as Copilot, what matters most is how you use it. Safe choices mean protecting your data, following your assessment brief, and making sure AI supports your learning rather than replacing it.

Treat this page as a quick checklist before trying any tool and follow the full guidance on AI and data privacy, which is the authoritative page for protecting your information. If you use Abertay-supported tools like Microsoft Copilot Chat, many of the risks in this checklist are already covered by the university’s licence. These checks are especially important if you choose to use public tools instead.

Important note:

Always follow your assessment brief. It will specify whether you can use Generative AI (GenAI) in your work, and whether this must be acknowledged. Requirements may vary by module or programme. If there is any conflict between this guidance and your assessment brief, the brief takes priority. For details of the University’s official position, see Using AI: Rules and Responsibilities.

Why T&Cs matter
Check how your data is stored
Check if your input will be reused for training
Confirm who owns your work
Check accuracy disclaimers in T&Cs
Read the small print on cost
