At Abertay, you are encouraged to explore Generative AI (GenAI) tools responsibly — but always check your assessment brief, as some modules may not allow their use. Your own ideas and voice must remain central to your work. AI can support your learning, but it cannot replace you.

AI is evolving quickly. New tools and features appear all the time, and universities (including Abertay) are updating guidance as things change. Always check back here for the latest advice, and don’t assume today’s guidance will stay the same throughout your degree.

Terminology note: Whenever you see ‘AI’ on these pages, it means GenAI tools — systems that can create new text, images, code, or other content. This is different from non-generative AI features already built into everyday software or services (such as spelling and grammar checks in Word, design suggestions in PowerPoint, or AI used in web search). GenAI is treated differently because it creates new content and raises specific issues around accuracy, integrity, and responsibility.
